Angela and Angry Little Robot

I met Angela last month near Bowling Green in lower Manhattan.

She has this tattoo on her arm, and, well, I just had to ask about it:

Angela explained that this is based on the web comic Angry Little Robot. She wanted to send me a link to the page, but the site is gone. However, she did find her favorite strip:

Angela told me:

"I got the tattoo on the one year anniversary of dating my now-husband after getting borderline too drunk to tattoo.  My other tattoos are for the most part memorials, so I wanted something that I liked that didn't have a sad memory."

Netty and Huey (at the NYC Urban Tattoo Convention)

Seeing as Black History Month is winding down, and I still have some leftover 2015 photos to share, this tattoo seems appropriate as February comes to a close:

I spotted this tattoo of Huey Freeman, from the comic strip The Boondocks, on the arm of Netty, at last June's Urban Tattoo Convention in Brooklyn.

What's remarkable about this tattoo is that it's not all tattoo. Netty explained that she had the tattoo inked around her birthmark. Look again:

Huey's hair is mostly birthmark. She credited Nelly, a travelling artist from L.A. (Instagram here), with skillfully blending Huey's hair into the pre-existing mark on her arm. Pretty nifty job.

Why Huey Freeman? Netty explained, "I love him and what he represents."

Michael's Calvin Embodies His Spirit of Adventure

I met Michael back in August out on Penn Plaza and he shared this tattoo, on the upper left side of his chest:

That is, for those who don't know, the comic strip character Calvin, from Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes.
 
Michael is an illustrator and visual artist. He explains this tattoo:

"I’m a Calvin and Hobbes fanatic since I was a kid. I own every single strip. I actually have two of those omnibus hardcover [volumes] and I had gone on a road trip with my father and my 21-year old cousin. 17 states in three weeks. I‘ve always wanted a Calvin tattoo."

The tattoo depicts Calvin as one of his alter-egos, Spaceman Spiff.  The tattoo depicts Calvin, from the cover of Yukon Ho!, in which he runs away with Hobbes to the Yukon. Michael told me that this embodies his spirit of adventure.

The piece was inked by his friend Kyle Sajban at Red Rocket Tattoo in New York City.

We've featured a lot of work from Red Rocket here on this site, but I believe this is the first tattoo attributed to Kyle.
