Soraya's Amazing Tattoos Honor Her Family History

Last summer, down by the New York Stock Exchange, I met Soraya, who was visiting the city from Porto Allegre, Brazil. She shared some amazing work dedicated to her family, starting with this stunning black and gray portrait of her mother:

The compass is part of the overall theme of her sleeve, honoring her family's rich tradition as explorers. Thus, she has this amazing ship:

And this lighthouse:

As well as this chart and compass rose:

Soraya credited the artist Verani Fontana (@veranifontanatattoo) at Verani Tattoo (@veranitattoo) in Porto Allegre.

Thanks to Soraya for sharing this amazing work with us here on Tattoosday!

Anna's Colorful Map

I met Anna earlier this month on Wall Street, after spotting her colorful map tattoo:

No huge story here. Anna just likes to travel and has this colorful world map on her arm to illustrate that.

She credited the work to Tom Yak at Electric Tattoo (@electrictattoonj) in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Thanks to Anna for sharing this cool, colorful tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Bronwinn is Anchored to Brooklyn

I met Bronwinn on Beaver Street last month in downtown Manhattan. She was sporting a whole armful of cool designs and she shared this tattoo:

Bronwinn explained that this anchor is resting over an outline of the borough of Brooklyn, representing that this section of New York City is her home, through and through.

I've seen folks with outlines of countries and states before, but never distinct city outlines, and never combined with traditional anchors to show their connection to their homes.

She credited this to Ron Mor at Hand of Glory Tattoo in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Thanks to Bronwinn for sharing her cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Anna's Amazing Half-Sleeve Honors Her Brothers and Where They Have Lived

Yesterday we saw work from an Italian artist, today we are admiring ink I spotted on the subway last month that originated in Sweden.

I met Anna on the West 4th Street platform and hopped on the F train toward Brooklyn just to have a moment to talk to her and find out a little about her tattoos:

Anna explained the concept as a family-related sleeve. The two faces that are featured in the hot air balloons are portraits of her brothers, Mike and John. The maps that appear as background represent many of the places they have lived, like Japan, Peru, and Puerto Rico.

She credited this stunning work to Vilda Nordström at Vild@art in Vårgårda, Sweden. Check out their Facebook page here. Vilda's work is very impressive!

Thanks to Anna for sharing her tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Home is Where the Star Is

Yesterday in Penn Station, I met Jonathan, whose one tattoo caught my eye when I passed him in the Amtrak waiting area.

Except, sometimes, a fragment of a tattoo doesn't necessarily reveal the whole piece. As in Jonathan's case, I saw the back of his arm, and this segment, which resembled (to me, at the time), a crude figure with the beginning of a speech bubble emanating from its mouth:

I felt rather silly, however, when Jonathan agreed to participate and showed me the full tattoo:

The figure I imagined, of course, is really Long Island, and the balloon was the southern tip of the state of New York.

Jonathan explained that he is from Rochester, marked on the tattoo with a star, and that he lived in the same house growing up there for eighteen years. It's a New York state of mind, indeed.

The tattoo was done at Big Joe & Sons Tattooing in White Plains, New York.

Thanks to Jonathan for sharing his stately tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!
