Vita Shares Some Ink from Russia!

Catching up on some old material, these tattoos are from Vita, a Russian woman from St. Petersburg, who I met on the steps of Federal Hall in September of 2017.

Vita is a huge fan of The X-Files, and showed it proudly on her arm:

She credited the work to Dasha Kudri at No Name Tattoo Shop in St. Petersburg.

The following tattoo is dedicated to Vita's parents, who used to take a specific tram to visit one another in different cities:

She added that the Maneki-neko cat below the tram was "just for fun."

Vita also revealed this lovely tattoo on her ribs:

She explained that there was a big tattoo project being done to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund, with designs contributed by numerous artists. She said people would sign up and pick their favorite design and then winners were selected. All proceeds went to the WWF. This hand, with the word "SAVE" and a muskrat on the palm was inked by Andrey Kichaty (@kichatiy).

Julia's Tribute to Her Parents (and More!)

In late September, I met Julia, a young woman from Mar del Plata, Argentina, who was visiting New York City. I spotted her on Broad Street in lower Manhattan, and I stopped to talk to her about her tattoos.

She had quite a bit of work, most interesting was this piece on her leg that pays tribute to her parents:

Julia explained that the trumpet represents her father, who is a musician, and the book represents her mother, who is a retired professor. These two elements of her parents' lives were major influences on her own life, as well.

She credited this piece to Talpa (@talpa.t.artist) who tattoos out of Asylum 42 Tattoo (@asylum42tattoo) in Valencia, Spain.

Three for Thursday - Kirsten Shares Her Tattoos

I spotted Kirsten last month in lower Manhattan after I saw the tattoo on the back of her calf. I had to ask about it but, it turns out, she had other tattoos, as well. Fortunately for me, she was in a generous sharing mood, and took the time to tell me about all of them.

First up, her feet:

Kirsten, who hails from Australia, explained the origins of these tattoos

"I grew up in Canada, so I kind of just wanted to start getting some mystic animals going on ... it's just like nicknames for my parents; I always called my dad Papa Bear and my mom Momma Wolf, so I got them for my parents.

She credited the work to a Sydney-based artist who works under the moniker Sprinkles (@Sprinkles_).

Sprinkles took her to his friend Scott M. Harrison to get this tattoo, on her thigh:

Harrison noted " Really enjoyed doing the background pattern, would love to incorporate them into more pieces."

Kirsten explained:

"I've got like a theme of threes going on with all my other tattoos, so a three-eyed cat, it's kind of sll-seeing eye ... I got it kind of in honor of my friend that I'm visiting [in New York], she was always a crazy cat lady ... so one eye's for her, one eye's for the cat I grew up with [Betty Lou], and [one for] the cat I have now [Runty]."

And, finally, we have the tattoo I spotted in the first place:

She credited this to an artist named Louise that she met at the Australian Tattoo Expo in Sydney. This was one of the designs she had on display and Kirsten liked it.

Matt's Hands

I met Matt last month on the West 4th Street subway platform and stopped to talk to him (and his friend Stormy) about their tattoos. We'll look at what Stormy shared tomorrow, but today, it's all about Matt's hands:

No deep meaning here, other than the hand tattoos coming from Matt's appreciation of Japanese imagery, so the mask and geisha head seemed like good choices.

I can't speak to the details of all the knuckle work, although the dates 1956 and 1950 represent the years Matt's parents were born.

The hand tattoos were inked by Mike Nomy (@mikenomy) from South Shore Tattoo (@southshoretattooco) in Amityville, New York.

Tattoosday in Baltimore - Steven's Tributes to His Mom (and Dad)

Last weekend I was in Baltimore and ran with the family into a Planet Aid thrift shop near my daughter's college. I met a guy named Steven who had two tributes to his parents on his arms.

Seeing as it's Mother's Day today, let's start with the tattoo for his mom:

That's for his mom, Rosemary, with a stethoscope wrapped around a red rose.

And, rather than wait until next month for Father's Day, let's see his tribute to his dad, as well:

Steven had both tattoos incorporate elements of his parents' hobbies and vocations, and was quick to point out that these are not memorial tattoos, as both his folks are alive and well.

He credited the work to Infinite Art Studio in Toledo, Ohio.

Laura Brooks Shares Her Parents Names and Her Toe Knuckles

I met Laura Brooks outside of Macy*s on 34th Street last month. She has a lot of tattoos (she estimates 60% of her canvas is covered), so I deferred to her, asking which she wanted to share with us here on Tattoosday.

She offered up her wrists:

These are her parents names, Davis and Blythe, and they were designed by a friend of hers whose graffiti moniker is "Gamble". She credited the actual tattooing to an artist named Joe from Beelistic's Blood Money Tattoo in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Laura Brooks also informed me that she had tattoos on her toes, but she was wearing shoes when I met her. Later that day, she held to her word and sent me a photo of her toe knuckle tattoos which read "Dirty South":

She added:

"The artist was Brent Hale at No Regrets Tattoo Emporium in Memphis, TN. It was actually his idea. I wanted to get toe knuckle tattoos & couldn't decide what I wanted it to say. He came up with it while we were working on a different piece ... The significance is kind of obvious. Hometown pride. (:

One thing about toe tattoos: by far the most painful spot. And you have to get them touched up about half a dozen times before they look right. I should probably go get them done one more time but I'm procrastinating because of the pain."
