Aaron's Family in a Zodiac Sleeve

I met one of my neighbors, Aaron, over the weekend and he shared his incredible sleeve, which is devoted to the animals of the Chinese zodiac, as they relate to his family. Check it out:

His wife, Rebecca, was born in the year of the rooster, Aaron was born in the year of the dragon, his older son is born in the year of the tiger, and his youngest was born in the year of the goat:

Erica Got Her Goat

Last July at the New York Empire State Tattoo Expo (#nyempirestatetattooexpo), I met Erica at the South Shore Tattoo (#southshoretattooco) booth. Erica is the shop manager and laser technician at South Shore's shop in Amityville, Long Island. One of the trends that has developed in some tattoo shops recently has been the partnering with laser removal services and, in some cases, even having a laser technician on site.

She was kind enough to share one of her own tattoos with us:

She credited this to one of South Shore's artists, Garden Mike.

She explained:

"He does a painting a day and I watch him every day and I fell in love with that, I'm also an Aries ... I fought him for the painting of the goat for like six months...and then when my laser finally got delivered, it was ... on my laser, the painting of the goat, so I was like, now I got ya!"

Kim Shares a Tattoo Inspired by Bathory

I met Kim on the 34th Street subway platform while waiting for the A train.

I thought her goat tattoo was incredible, so I just had to ask about it.

Kim credited Heath Rave from Speakeasy Custom Tattoo in Chicago for this work.

The shading and texture created mostly using black and gray (with the exception of the red for the eyes) is quite excellent.

There's something very sinister about the image so I asked, why the goat? Kim explained that it is "the artist's version of this really famous Black Metal iconography from a band called Bathory."

Bathory is considered one of the bands from the first wave of heavy metal's "Black Metal," subgenre. Kim is a huge fan of the music, and the image on her arm reinforces that passion.

Chalk it Up to Teenage Angst

Sunday morning I was leaving Rite-Aid when a woman walked in. She had several visible tattoos so I turned around and walked back into the store. I introduced myself, Tattoosday, etc., and Courtney was happy to share her tattoo stories with me, offering up one of her seven tattoos:


All of her work is in black and gray. This piece is a tribal design, and is Satanic in origin. Courtney explained. She was a lapsed Roman Catholic who became involved in the Church of Satan. This piece is about 5 years old and was inked by Richie at Tattooing by Richie in Elmont, Long Island.

Incidentally, Courtney is no longer affiliated with that lifestyle and has returned to the Catholic Church. She says she was going through a phase and was experiencing teenage angst.


I had a nice chat with her about tattoos and how she is finding it challenging because she has a corporate job now, and finding attire that covers her ink appropriately can be tough. This almost limits her in her choice to get any more work done.

From what I can recall from our conversation and from seeing what was visible, she has three or four pieces in all on her legs, a tribal design on the lower part of her neck, an ankh on her lower back, and another piece on her right biceps. She did not show the biceps or lower back tattoos.

I explained to Courtney my policy is generally not to ask people, who are generally women, if I can photograph their lower backs. If they offer (like this woman did), I will snap away.
