melanie kristeen's Orchids (The Tattooed Poets Project)

Our next tattooed poet is melanie kristeen, who shared this phenomenal tattoo:

melanie gave us a little background on the tattoo:
"The tattoo on my left forearm is of a few orchids with water droplets and was done by Aleah Lauren (@iyamaleah) who works in Austin, Texas. The piece was crafted to pay homage to Clarice Lispector's stream-of-consciousness masterpiece, Água Viva. We read this experimental novel in the second year of my MFA program. It was inspiring and refreshing to me during a time when I sincerely began to doubt my relationship to poetry and writing. The tattoo was inspired by the quote from the book below,
The beautiful orchid is exquise and unpleasant. It isn't spontaneous. It needs a glass dome. But it is a magnificent woman and that cannot be denied. Nor can it be denied that it is noble because it is epiphytic. Epiphytes are born on other plants without however taking nutrition from them. I was lying when I said it was unpleasant. I adore orchids. They're born artificial, they're born art."
melanie shared the following poem, as well:

for the Men and Women
who still don’t know
what to make of it

These stories are true. – statement from louis c.k.

        I. curtain

I resolve to stare out from below || back and forth,
back and forth || through his window the sky appears

to breathe – breath heavy and ugly, the clouds are still
moving west, though, just barely || he clenches My wrists tight

as though spindles for fire || back and forth, I twist back and forth
so hard I drip pomegranate juice from forearms and elsewhere

My throat aches – it just wants sleep,
sullen and swollen though it may be.

II. coda

I don’t dream in parables
but that night I walked through a field

of dead palomino horses
on piles of yellowed fig leaves ||

in the black I sucked
my gums so hard

a tooth came straight
out of my skull and into being.

Maria's Tribute to Oz and a Floral Flourish

Earlier this month I met a couple from the United Kingdom, sitting on the steps of Federal Hall in lower Manhattan.
They both had a lot of ink and I'm splitting their work into two posts, one today and one tomorrow.
Maria and Mark were visiting from Norwich, England.

Maria shared first, starting with this cool Wizard of Oz tattoo on her calf:

When I asked Maria what motivated her to get this tattoo, she replied,
"I'm a massive Wizard of Oz fan, a big geek."
I then took a couple of shots of this stunning floral piece that ran from her upper left arm across her upper back, flowering with orchids (which Maria loves), plumeria and hummingbirds:

All of her work is by Fidel "SkullSugar" Quiñones at Lucky 13 Tattoo n Norwich.

Thanks to maria for sharing her tattoos with us here on Tattoosday! Be sure to check back tomorrow to see Mark's work, also by SkullSugar!

Tattoosday Walks Into a Bar: Flowers in Phoenix

On a recent trip to Southern California, my connecting flight in Arizona had mechanical difficulties and I got bumped to another plane, two hours later.

As luck would have it, there is a fabulous bar in the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport – Four Peaks Brewing Company

So while I whiled away my time, chatting with the bartender and other patrons, I caught up on email, gobbled up some delicious quesadillas and enjoyed Four Peaks’ Oatmeal Stout and their ¡Odelay!
The Stout was cold, dark and delicious, and the Odelay was one of the best beers I’ve had. It had the full body of a dark beer, with the delicious chocolaty taste, punctuated with a kick of spiciness. I knew it was what I’d be ordering when I stopped back on my return.

I also chatted with one of the servers, named Katie, who was kind enough to share this floral half-sleeve:

The arrangement includes orchids, lilies, cherry blossoms and daisies. “I love orchids and lilies,” she told me, adding “I have a fresh orchid in my apartment at all times.”

When I spotted the text on her inner arm, she allowed me take a photo of that, as well:

It reads “We accept the love we think we deserve,” which is a quote from  Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower one of Katie’s favorite books.

She credited her work to Miguel at Body Canvas Tattoo in Phoenix.

I enjoyed my brief respite at Four Peaks and looked forward to stopping back in on my way back to New York. Alas, my return brought me in at the height of the lunch hour. The place was mobbed and I only had a brief layover.

Thanks to Katie and the staff at Four Peaks Brewing Company! Katie, for sharing her awesome tattoos, and Four Peaks, for making a delay in my travels significantly more delicious!

Tattoosday Goes to L.A.: Alisonna Shares a Little Hawai'i at LAX

Despite the fact that my flight was boarding, I was at the next gate over, talking to Alisonna.

My trip to Los Angeles was pretty much over, but I spotted Alisonna's foot and couldn't resist one last interview. Having been raised in Honolulu, this tattoo was an added bonus:

Despite my initial guess that this was a gecko, Alisonna clarified:
"Have you ever heard of ʻaumākua? It's a family guardian. Hawaiians believe in family guardians ... there's multiples, like geckos, sharks, turtles ... Gecko is mine, and so I decided to put it on my foot, on me left side, actually because in Hawaiian culture, your left side is your man side and your right side is your woman side ... the two orchids are for my ... parents, and this right here, the lauhala [the curved fragment above the two orchids] is for the family."
She credited the work to an artist called "Nae" who had worked at 808 Tattoo Studio in Kāneʻohe, Hawai'i.

A warm mahalo to Alisonna for sharing her guardian tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Nadine's Ankh and Orchids

I met Nadine last month and she was kind enough to share this beautiful floral piece with us:

The symbol in the foreground is her own "stylized version" of an ankh, a symbol dating back to ancient Egypt which means eternal life.

She has orchids added to the piece because her mother loves those flowers. The orchids were inked about five years ago which is remarkable because reds and yellows tend to fade more quickly on the skin and, Nadine notes, "so far my color has held true".

The ankh took about 45 minutes to do while the rest of the tattoo took five and a half hours over two sittings.

She wanted to point out that the outline is done in purple ink, not black, a nice artistic touch that she convinced her artist was a good choice.

This lovely tattoo was done at New York Adorned, by Brian Randolph.

Work from NY Adorned has been posted previously here (links to all posts tagged NY Adorned).

Thanks again to Nadine for sharing this fantastic tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Tattoosday at the Mall, Part 2 - Michelle's Purple Orchids

As the day at Roosevelt Field progressed, I dawdled near store entrances while my wife and daughters shopped. At H & M, Melanie emerged with the girls and asked me, "Did you see those flowers? They were beautiful!" Of course, I had missed them, but I was intrigued.

As the family moved on, I went back into the store, seeking the tattoo in question. After a few minutes, I found Michelle, the host of the tattoo above. She was very receptive to pulling the shoulder down on her top so I could see the whole piece.

Michelle, who has seven tattoos in all, had these orchids inked because she thought they were beautiful. She had them done a year and a half ago by Renee at Memphis Tattoo in Bayside, Queens. The shop is now called Top Shelf Tattoo.

Thanks to Michelle for being so receptive and sharing her awesome tattoo here with us at Tattoosday!
