Hugo's Back (from the Archives)

Working through some old posts, I stumbled across a few from 2018's United Ink Summer Vibe show out on Long Island.

Check out this work on Hugo, featuring a Mayan theme, crafted by Roberto Castillo (@roberto_castillo1) from Sacred Tattoo (@sacredtattoonyc) in Manhattan:

Thanks to Hugo for sharing his cool back piece with us here on Tattooday!

2019 Empire State Tattoo Expo Begins Today!

The 2019 Empire State Tattoo Expo (@nyempirestatetattooexpo) begins today and runs through the weekend at the Midtown Hilton here in New York City!

Be sure to get your tickets and maybe you'll run into me!

One thing is guaranteed, you'll see some phenomenal art being created.

Take, for example, this back piece on Alissa:

Last year, Alissa "sat like a champ," as two amazing artists, Jhon Campuzano (@jhoncampuzanotattoo), co-owner of Focused on Creation (@focusedoncreation) and Andres Jaramillo (@andresjaramillotattoo) SIMULTANEOUSLY worked on this piece throughout the weekend as astonished convention-goers passed by and checked on the progress being made.

By the end of the weekend, Alissa had this amazing back piece to show for her patience and pain.

Thanks to Alissa for sharing last year and to Jhon and Andres for their amazing work.

The Expo starts today at 4pm and runs through Sunday at 7pm, all at the Midtown Hilton (1335 Avenue of the Americas). It's going to be a scorcher this weekend, so what better way to cool off, but to check out some great tattoos!?

Chris Caruso on The Tattooed Poets Project

Today's tattooed poet is Chris Caruso, who shared his back:

Chris tells us:
"The artist who did this piece was Everett Magie out of Alien Ink Tattoos (@alieninktattoosnj). The back piece itself is a cover up. Previously my back had an assortment of tattoos that in my 20’s I believed were a good idea. Some of the gems were a Chaos Cross tramp stamp and a bar code. When I begin the cover up, I wanted to reflect the change in my world view since my twenties. I have moved away from the angst-ridden belief that everything was chaos and that humans were nothing more than cogs in a callous world. I wanted to instead focus on a more spiritual path, one filled with optimism. While the piece is still in process the main components are there: The Buddha sitting on a lotus, a Buddha face watching my back, and the beginnings of temple pillars."
In addition, Chris also sent us the following poem:

Dearest Picture Frame,

I wonder how a forest will look when it turns to stone, aged by lack of human hands. If only I could choose the time and day, I become petrified flesh. Perhaps it is better to molt a trail of discarded pasts behind. Frame them a pinned anthropology of the self. Each moment mounted on the wall, stored in desk draws like beheaded wasps and fractured shells of beetles. Come stranger enter into me, but only the husks I was.
This is easier than looking in eyes and explaining why. Or describing the notes tacked to walls of how a past me believed a future me should be.

Fill this shell with stories and watch how it breathes. Fill this shell with movements and it will seem to touch and offer a hand in need.
I prefer not to remember how old skin merely seeds the growth beneath.

~ ~ ~
Chris Caruso earned MFA’s in Creative Writing from Boise State University and Rutgers University Newark. His poems appear in online and print journals. He’s lived in several states and just moved back to New Jersey after seven years in Boise, ID. Chris hopes to eventually live in a small cottage with a koi pond in Oregon.
Thanks to Chris for sharing his tattoos and poem with us here on Tattoosday!

Katie's Spectacular Qilin

Earlier this month at the Summer Vibe Tattoo Show on Long Island, I met "Katie Kahboom," who had this back piece done simultaneously by two artists at once!

This Qilin, often called a Kirin, is a mythical Asian creature that is a mash-up of sorts, a chimera with dragon features and those of another, usually a hooved beast like a giraffe.

This was the combined work of JK (@jktattoony) and Andy Jung (@andyjungtattoo), who work out of World Famous Tattoo Art Gallery (@worldfamoustattooartgallery) in West Babylon, New York.

Thanks to Katie and her team of artists for sharing this amazing work with us here on Tattoosday!

Last weekend at the Summer Vibe Tattoo Festival on Long Island, I met Chris, who shared her amazing back piece:

This incredible landscape is the work of Luke LoPorto (@LukeLoporto) from Timmy Tattoo (@timmy_tattoo_shop) on Long Island.

This amazing work rightfully garnered a first place trophy for black and gray work at the convention!

Danny's Amazing Back Piece (Tattoosday Goes to Philly)

If you follow Tattoosday on Instagram (@tattoosday), you would have already seen this, but I am sharing it again as a regular post because this was one of my favorite pieces from the 20th Annual Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention (@villainarts) earlier this month.

This one's on Danny:

Danny's back piece, a super conceptual design by New York-based artist Jhon Campuzano (@jhoncampuzanotattoo), took second prize in the extra-large black and gray category on day 2 of the convention. Simply spectacular!

Vincent Impresses with a Hanuman Back Piece (Tattoosday Goes to Philly)

Last weekend at the 20th Annual Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention (@villainarts), I met Vincent, who shared this amazing back piece:

This phenomenal work depicts the Hindu deity Hanuman and was created by tattooist Eric Backlund (@sketchisms) from Skin Illustrations (@skinillustrations) in Cookstown, New Jersey.

I mean, this is just amazing and seeing this kind of masterful work is one of the main reasons one goes to tattoo shows.

Jesse Burch's Back o' Birds

This week we're featuring tattoos on alumni from Occidental College, in honor of homecoming and family weekend, and we'll start with this amazing set of tattoos on the back of Jesse Burch, Class of 1992:

Jesse told me that the center shape was done about six years ago, but the birds were tattooed earlier this year. All of the work is by Jeremy Swan (@mister_swan) at Broken Art Tattoo (@broken_art_tattoo) in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.

When I asked Jesse about the origins of the work, he replied:
"Well, the center thing is an old design by my friend Bill Dawson. Its meaning is secret.
The birds each represent parts of me. The Western mockingbird on my right shoulder is perched on a palo verde branch. Both are native to the west, like me, and the mockingbird represents my interest in imitation and my chameleonic nature. The left shoulder has the skylark on English oak. That’s my anglophilia in a nutshell.
I bought both bird images on eBay. They’re from vintage bird prints — another thing I like: old shit.
I like them a ton, despite being somewhat atypical, I guess. But then, I reckon I am too.
I will say that it was weird to go from being a person with a tattoo to being a 'tattooed person' overnight. Took some getting used to. And, of course, now I want more....
Also, I meant for the whole thing together to look kind of like a coat of arms. But I think the middle piece needs updating."
I've known Jesse since 1988, when he matriculated as a first year student at Occidental. I was one of his resident advisers. Jesse is a working actor in Los Angeles (see his credits here) and he also hosts a web show on YouTube called "You're Better Than Me." The episode below is his interview with Jeremy, his tattoo artist:

May the Fourth with Anthony's Astonishing Star Wars Canvas

It's May the 4th, the day when, in the past, we have occasionally celebrated Star Wars tattoos and, this year, we have a special treat. Last month, I was introduced to Anthony, who a mutual friend advised had some amazing Star Wars tattoos. Boy, was he not exaggerating. Check this out:

I mean, come on! Even a person unfamiliar with the Star Wars universe has to recognize the mastery in this tattoo work.

The detail is just incredible:

And Anthony's work blends into his sides:

And meets on Anthony's chest in a fantastic battle scene:

Anthony proudly bears the work of an artist named Needles (@darthneedles), who has done all of his work. He started working with Needles in the early 2000s (perhaps, 2004) and estimates that he has spent 40 hours on the back alone.

The chest piece is one of his favorite parts and was named "Best Star Wars Tattoo" in the January/February 2007 issue of Star Wars Insider.

Today, on May 4th, Anthony will be visiting three New York City children's hospitals in full stormtrooper gear to help celebrate the holiday. Here's Anthony in one of a few uniforms he dons:

Anthony is commanding officer of the Empire City Garrison for the 501st Legion.

If you're unaware of what he's referring to, "The Legion is an all-volunteer organization formed for the express purpose of bringing together costume enthusiasts under a collective identity within which to operate." He adds, "The Legion seeks to promote interest in Star Wars through the building and wearing of quality costumes, and to facilitate the use of these costumes for Star Wars-related events as well as contributions to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work...".

The Empire City Garrison is the New York branch of this organization with outposts in multiple states and on several continents.

For more information, visit the 501st Legion's website here

Anthony's work is astounding, when viewed in its entirety and he likens his collection of body art to "the Star Wars journey through tattoos.: His favorite part? "The fact that [it] is on me forever," he says.

Thanks to Anthony for sharing his amazing work with us here on Tattoosday!

Brewsday Tuesday: Flying Dog Edition

It's time for another installment of Brewsday Tuesday on Tattoosday!

If you missed our initial post, this new feature highlights the body art of someone from an American brewery and shares, not only their tattoos, but a little bit about their company, their role, and a little beer talk, as well.

Today we are honored to be featuring Flying Dog Brewery (@flyingdogbrewery) in Frederick, Maryland!

Meet Heather Ault, who is Flying Dog's Director of National Accounts and Export:

Photo courtesy of  Jessica Patterson Photography
Before we talk about Flying Dog, let's first take a look at some of Heather's tattoos.

We see she's got quite a bit of ink on her back, so let's take a closer look:

I asked Heather about the lilies on her back and she replied:
"...The lilies are ... Stargazer Lilies ... Funny enough, lilies actually represent purity…..which I would say I lost a long time ago. However, the Stargazers represent prosperity..and well…who doesn’t want to be prosperous? They are actually also my very favorite flower."
As cool as these lilies are, she shared this awesome owl tattoo, as well:

Heather explained the origin of this tattoo:
"There are few reasons behind the owl. First, my grandmother loves owls and has them around her house. Knick knack owls, not actual owls of course. Also, Athena, Greek Goddess Wisdom, warfare, and courage is often depicted with an owl on her shoulder. And, well, I would like to be wise and courageous. So it’s just a little reminder. I added the MD flag shield because I am born and raised in Maryland and I love my state and my flag."
Heather credited Gary Gerhardt (@ggtattoos) at Classic Electric Tattoo (@classicelectrictattoo) in Frederick, MD with both of the lilies and the owl.

Heather has been with Flying Dog Brewery for 11 years. Initially, it was Frederick Brewing Co, which was bought by Flying Dog about a year into her tenure there.

I first took notice of Flying Dog because of their labels. They stand out like works of art on the beer aisle, thanks to the brewery's partnership with the great Ralph Steadman. Steadman is most famous for his collaborative illustrations with the late great Hunter S. Thompson; his artwork for Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is epic, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Heather raves "I would totally NOT be doing our brand justice if I didn't say something about our label art and Ralph Steadman, our artist." It's hard to disagree when she says, "I would argue that our labels are the best in craft beer because we have Gonzo Artist Ralph Steadman, an icon!"

Just take a look at the six-pack of Raging Bitch I bought:

I've had quite a few of the Flying Dog brands over the years, but Raging Bitch has become one of my favorites, and definitely tops among my favorite IPAs.

Heather was happy to sing its praises and explain why it's such an outstanding brand:
"Raging Bitch is a pioneer beer in the Belgian Style IPA category. Actually, THE pioneer. First of its kind. We were the first to use a Belgian yeast in an IPA and many other breweries have tried to make this style but I don’t think anyone has nailed it like we did yet. She’s very special to me."
I like it because it's not too hoppy, right in the mid-range of the IBU scale and it just has an amazingly pungent robust flavor. And at 8.3% ABV, it packs a good punch, like you would expect of something called Raging Bitch.

I encourage Tattoosday readers to head over to Flying Dog (www.flyingdogbrewerry.com) and check out all their brands, and the great labels, as well.

Honestly, when I first thought about Tattoos and Beer together on Tattoosday, Flying Dog was one of the first to come to mind, because their visual art seems ideal for tattoo enthusiasts. In fact, Flying Dog just celebrated "National Tattoo Day at the Brewery" on Sunday, July 17. Customers visiting their tasting room receive a 25% discount for life, just by showing a Flying Dog tattoo. They even had artists on hand to ink customers. See the flash, and the details about the event here. Maybe I'll drop in next summer!

I want to thank Heather Ault from Flying Dog for sharing her tattoos and her thoughts on working at the brewery. "My favorite part about working with Flying Dog is that I can be myself," she told me, and then added one of their mottos, "Flying Dog is made up of a small, dedicated band of craft beer mavericks who stand tall and never eat shit."

Also thanks to Rohry Flood, Flying Dog's "Master of the Content Universe," for helping me assemble this feature with Heather.

And as a thanks to Tattoosday readers for visiting Brewsday Tuesday, Flying Dog is giving away a special gift pack with a t-shirt, koozie, and bottle opener. All you have to do to enter is either a) comment on the post naming your favorite Flying Dog Brand; b) comment on the post on Tattoosday's Facebook page here, or on Tattoosday's Instagram (@tattoosday); or c) re-tweet this post. How cool is that!?

Cheers!

Andrew's Phenomenal Front and Back Pieces

I met Andrew last week on Wall Street. His arms were covered in cool tattoos, but he revealed some insane art on his chest for me. I always wonder what everyone walking around us must be thinking when this happens. Likely, it is "Wow!"

I don't know who did the naked lady in the hammock on the lower abdomen with the banner "Rise & Shine," but the majority of the chest, that insane dragon, was inked by Aaron Coleman (@Clam13) at Immaculate Tattoo (@ImmacultaeTattoo) in Mesa, Arizona.

Andrew told me, "I just wanted a dragon," so he gave the artist free reign to lay it down. Even more remarkable was that he got this in one sitting in six and a half hours ("hurt like a motherfucker").

And if that tattoo isn't awesome enough, check out his back piece:

This amazing Grim Reaper was done by Josh Palmer (@JoshuaPalmer) at The Aloha Monkey Tattoo (@TheAlohaMonkey) in Burnsville, Minnesota. This piece took"four or five sittings ... about fifteen hours"

Andrew estimates he has about 70-75% of his body covered.

He chooses artists that he likes and gives them free reign, obviously with spectacular results. "I think [when] you give the artist a lot more creativity .... toward the tattoo then I think it makes the acquisition of that tattoo that much more exciting when they get to do what they want."

On top of being a collector of great tattoo art, Andrew is also a great photographer. Check out his work on his website here.

Thanks to Andrew for sharing his amazing work with us here on Tattoosday!

A Tattooed Poem on a Tattooed Poet - Angel Nafis on Danez Smith

Today's tattooed poet is Danez Smith. Look at this amazingness:

Danez tells us:
"i got this tattoo of my good friend Angel Nafis’ poem last summer. the summer before, i had heard her read it on a magical and rainy morning in Brooklyn when i was visiting her. Have you never heard a poem and realized you’ve been waiting to hear it? That even on that first listen or read it just takes you up in familiar arms and imprints itself on your soul? that’s how i feel about the poem. I had been saving the prime back space reality for something that i wanted to dissolve into the earth with, and this is it. Joshua Bennett had some really smart stuff to say about the poem here. This poem is a religion, and Angel is a saint. Now my back is my bible. Hallelujah.
i got the tattoo at a tattoo parlor down then apartment in Minneapolis from my house last year. It was called something else at the time, but now the shop is called Steady Tattoo. I wanted to go for a typewriter feel, and i wanted the text to be bold and asking to be read. something to make we feel like she typed the poem on me."
You can read Angel's complete poem here. Danez notes that his tattoo is only one section of the poem. He also shared the amazing moment when he revealed his tattoo to Angel:

Danez shared the following poem that originally appeared here, on the Collagist:

One buzzfeed test tells me I'm bonafide naughty, the other one tells me I got hella life skills

I typed a description of myself on Web MD, told me by my symptoms I either had the blues or I was a hoe. I guess both are true. What's a slut if not sad? I am lonely even when filled to the brim with some guy who I think is named Robert. Who knows. He's behind me, hacking away at my body like a sous-chef gone mad or maybe just like he doesn't know my name, I'm on all fours on my phone taking quizzes on Buzzfeed to tell me what X-Men character I am & what Sex In The City Character I would totally be BFF's with. If you must know, Wolverine (the one who can't control himself) & Samantha (the one with the mouth shaped like mine (you know, open)). When he's done, he leaves. I wish there was a way to complicate that, but isn't it simple? Isn't this our most ancient & practiced ritual? Haven't men been meeting to be lonely together for years? Is me playing on my phone any worse than some two men laid up in a field of tobacco, one reduced to grunt & thrust, one staring up at the sky making stories out of clouds? Give him his blue heaven littered with doves to keep him while some man dances a brute waltz within him, just leave me my twitter so I can live tweet this mediocre Moulin Rouge #hedoesntlooklikehispics #seveninchesmyass #wheresthebeef #couldagonegroceryshopping #IwonderwhatBeyonceisdoingrightnow #nothingbettertodothancountthestars #allthestarsarelonely #moststarsaredead

The Tattooed Poets Project: Katie Bickham

Katie Bickham is our next tattooed poet. She first emailed me the photo of her tattoo two years ago but her submission fell through the cracks. I apologize in advance for everyone having to wait two years to see this awesome work:

I mean, seriously, how cool is that?

Katie credits this work to Micah Harold at Red Handed Tattoo Parlour in Shreveport, Louisiana.  She tells us how this piece came to life:
"As a writer, when I thought of getting tattoos, I always thought I'd get a particular passage or an image from one book or another.  But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that there were too many.  Being a reader and a writer make me part of a tradition so big and so old that I'll never even read a tenth of a percent of what's already in the world.  So I decided to get the biggest stack of books that would fit on my torso.  But not a tidy stack.  I wanted a stack that was toppling, like it was always about to tip over with its own weight.  No titles. Just a stack of books always waiting to be opened."
Katie sent us the following poem, which is previously unpublished:

Proof

I pick up my lecture on metaphor
from where I’d stopped it on Monday,
alternate deliberate eye
contact and turning my back
to make examples in large letters.

They cannot picture me
in the neighboring chair, where I scribbled
for eight years, staring at the backs
of my own professors, who I never seemed to picture
going home.

I sit and stay after for questions,
the long desk distance
between my body and their bodies
making us unreal
and improvable to each other.

Hours later, I hear the scrape
of the garage door lifting,
hear you drop
your briefcase on the kitchen counter,
and we resume

where we left off before
I wound up my hair, buttoned
my sweater and filled my thermos
this morning. You bare
my tattooed back

and exhale your other day over it
and plant your mouth
on that one spot
I cannot touch
with any part of my own body.

Tammy Bendetti's Phoenix Soars [The Tattooed Poets Project]

Today's tattooed poet is Tammy Bendetti, who shared this unfinished, yet nonetheless spectacular back piece:

Tammy sent us a back story that addresses this work, as well as the poem she included:
By the time Paul Lunetta over at Fossil Tattoo [in Fruita, Colorado] began this piece, I'd been wanting it for a decade. Years before, the day after Senior Prom, I'd gone to the Texas coast with a group of my friends. It was sunny, we were giddy, and three of us swam out alongside the pier. We were unaware of the riptides that plagued that stretch of the beach, and the wind that was gradually picking up far out over the ocean. The waves became suddenly huge, and we realized just how far out we were. Pummeled by whitecaps and dragged backward, we were fighting to keep our heads up, much less make much progress toward land. My friend Ashley helped pull me in a little; then, our friend Yohance helped both of us in turn. This must have exhausted him. By the time I flagged down a child with a boogie board, Yohance was falling behind. Horrified, we watched him ride each swell upward, farther and farther out to sea. We couldn't turn back, lest all of us be drowned. Three days later, the Coast Guard found his body.
I couldn't let survivor's guilt drag me under, too. Instead, I decided I had to make something of myself, but what did that even mean? I was already headed off to the University of the South in the fall. Everything felt drenched in meaning, everything a symbolic gesture. So I explored the forests. I overcame my anxiety and made dozens of friends. I drank too much, slept too little, learned a lot. It was one of the happiest times of my life. But after a heartbreak coincided with an illness, I flunked out. I had to move back in with my parents while I recuperated. They took good care of me, but I felt lost. Eventually I fell in love again and transferred to my local state college to finish my degree. By that time I was studying with a baby in my arms, in the depths of postpartum depression. That felt like drowning, too.

Today, I've married that second love, who buoys me up. We have two children. After seven years of silence, I started writing poetry again, and have begun painting in earnest. And I got this gorgeous ink across my back, which is still unfinished. That, too, seems symbolic. None of my victories have been what I've expected; I don't feel I've "found myself." I think we are unfinished works of art, always under revision, always waking up a little different. And that leaves room for hope. That's what this poem is about.

The Things You Thought You Needed

Those golden slippers will not fit you

after your feet callous from gravel.

Your amulet to save you from witches

was hasty; it nips at your dreams

like papercuts, now that you’ve

started hoarding white sage, eyebright,

and rosemary. And all the men

on white horses that pass through this town

are looking for women sleepier than you,

who prefer their kisses stolen, not given,

who wake only to promises less pedestrian

than a dog’s warm lick and the thought

of sausages on a cast-iron pan.

Vito's Back in Memory of Mom

I met Vito at the NYC Tattoo Convention last month.

He shared this amazing back piece:

This was done in memory of Vito's mother by Megan Jean Morris from Painted Soul Tattoos in Wallingford, Connecticut, although he noted she did this while doing a guest spot at Paul Booth's Last Rites Gallery.

Thanks to Vito for sharing this with us here on Tattoosday!
