Maddie's Family Heirlooms (Tattoosday Walks Into a Bar)

Back in December 2017, I popped into Krupa Grocery (@krupagrocery) in Brooklyn to grab a beer.

Maddie was behind the bar, and she shared a couple of her tattoos.

Her first tattoo was this knife, which she got when she was 18, at Hand of Glory Tattoo (@handofglorytattoo) in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Maddie told me this is a depiction of a sterling silver family heirloom - a bread knife that was in the possession of her grandfather's second wife. The family no longer uses it as a bread knife and regards it as a dagger.

She also shared this wedding portrait of her parents, tattooed by Ashley Strout (aka Ol' Ash), formerly of Magic Cobra Tattoo Society (@magiccobratattoo):

While talking to Maddie, I enjoyed a Light Year double IPA from Grimm Artisanal Ales (@grimmales):

It was delicious.

Kristine's Roses on the Platform

I recently met Kristine on a subway platform in Brooklyn. She shared this tattoo on her arm:

Kristine told me she loves roses and that she just liked the artwork for this tattoo.

She credited the work to Amy Shapiro (@amy_shapiro) from Three Kings Tattoo (@threekingstattoo) in Brooklyn. Amy is currently working at Lifetime Tattoo (@lifetimetattoodeniver) in Denver. We currently featured work by Amy back in 2015 here.

Denenne Tells Us Love Kills

Last week I saw an incredible tattoo while walking on 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Needless to say, I was thrilled when Denenne agreed to let me take a photo to share here:

When I asked Denenne how this tattoo came about, she elaborated:

"I was thinking about my ex-boyfriend because I loved him so much that I felt like I wanted to kill him every single day of my life. And then, after he passed away, I just thought that Love killed me  ... Although I wanted to kill him with everything on my back, at the end of the day, love killed who I actually loved."

Deneene went to her artist, Jeanine at Liquid Expression Tattoos in south Brooklyn, and worked with her to transform the emotion into the final tattoo on her upper back, with LOVE spelled out in weapons. L is represented by a handgun, O by a hand grenade, V by a folded knife, and E by brass knuckles.
