Kristin's Disneyana Sleeve

We're clearing out our pre-pandemic backlog and today featuring some Disney-themed tattoos spotted at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade back in June 2018.

I met Kristin pre-parade at the Coney Island Brewing Company and talked to her about her arm.

In addition to the piece at the top of the arm,

but also features Cinderella and Prince Eric.

She also has this Ariel piece:

She credited the work to artist Joe Budds at Monarch Tattoo in New Jersey.

Jess and E.T. (2018 Coney Island Mermaid Parade)

Going through our archives, I stumbled upon this previously unpublished tattoo from the 2018 Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade):

Of course, this is E.T., gracing the leg of Jess. She explained that she got this done in tribute to her best friend. The work was done by Michael Patrick (@michaelpatricktattooist) from Milestone Tattoo in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

She also shared this cool design on her arm:

Lori's Siamese Twins With a Somber Memorial

Back in June, I met Lori at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. She shared this tattoo on her arm:

This cool tattoo of Siamese Twins has tattoos of its own, including the "10/30" visible on the chest.

Lori explained that this refers to today, October 30, which she referred to as the "happiest and saddest day," noting that it was the day she married her husband, but it was also the day he died, one year later, on their first anniversary.

She credited the work to Mike at Read Street Tattoo Parlour in Baltimore.

Angelina and Her Chakras

Going back into my unpublished archives, I remembered I never posted this shot from the 2017 Coney Island Mermaid Parade:

This is Angie (@angelina_monalisa) who had these chakra tattoos inked by Matt Huff (@matthufftattoo) at Brooklyn Ink (@originalbrooklynink).

Angie explained the chakras to me, telling me that "they are basically the different portals of energy that connect the body to the physical and spiritual world, as well as the top chakra, which is your connection to all of the energy and knowledge of the universe (essentially, the Third Eye)."

From top to bottom, the chakras are crown, third eye, throat, heart, solar plexus, sacral and root. She noted that "the root is technically located at the foot but, ya know, artist liberties."

Where The Starry Night Sidewalk Ends

I met Christopher last summer at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade). He shared this cool tattoo:

This familiar-looking imagery is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's The Starry Night. Christopher told me that, when he was a kid, he used to carry around a Starry Night poster, so he has had an affinity for the artwork for a long time. What's particularly cool about this piece is that, on the inner part of his arm, it merges into other familiar imagery:

That is the cover art from Shel Silverstein's classic book Where the Sidewalk Ends.

Christopher credits the tattoos to an artist named Pee Wee in Manhattan.

Jackie's Beautiful Back Tattoos

This past June at he annual Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade) on Coney Island, I met Jackie, who shared some gorgeous tattoos on her back:

Jackie explained that the flowers on the left are dogwood blossoms, in honor of her grandmother. The mandala on the right is a nod to her being a yogi.

Both pieces are the creations of Felix Vayner (@felixvayner) from Woodstock Tattoo Studio (@woodstocktattoostudio).

Cristina's Heart of Palm

I spotted this tattoo on Cristina back in June while attending the 2018 Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade):

These two palm trees make a perfect heart shape. Nothing fancy, just a cool design and a positive message.

Cristina credited the work to Josh Arseneau (@josharseneau) at Electric Anvil Tattoo (@electricanviltattoo) in Brooklyn.

Nikki the Mermaid Tips Her Scales

Last weekend at the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, I met quite a few mermaids, including Nikki, a self-described "Land and Sea Mermaid." Nikki's mermaid cred are evidenced by her scales:

Nikki credited her work to tattoo artist Mel, from Eternal Images in Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey.

Mermaid Brielyn Shares Some Mer-Ink at the Mermaid Parade

Last Saturday, I was hanging out at the Coney Island Brewing Company (@coneyislandbeer), prior to the annual Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade).

This was an excellent venue to enjoy a Mermaid Pilsner and talk to some actual mermaids about their tattoos.

One such mermaid, Brielyn (@mermaidbrielyn), had the ink to match her awesome mermaidness:

This lovely mermaid and merman were tattooed at the Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention (@villainarts) this past winter by Humberto (@elbenttattoo), who is based out of Paris, France.

Coney Island, Baby!

It goes without saying that Coney Island and the Mermaid Parade go hand-in-hand and, quite honestly, I couldn't imagine a parade like this anywhere else. Some folks express their love of Coney Island in many ways, often in the form of tattoos, like Ash, one of the many Mermaids I met last Saturday. Check out her phenomenal tribute, in ink:

As you would imagine, Ash told me "Coney Island is my favorite place." From the Face of the Steeplechase to the world-famous Cyclone, Ash has the locale all packed into one frame that runs the whole side of her thigh.

She credited Yurgo from Explicit Tattoo in Suffern, New York, with this great tribute to Coney Island.

While I was talking with Ash, some random dude wanted a photo with her, so I thought I'd include it here, partly because it looks like a shark is attacking his head:

Terri Shares Two Great Tattoos (at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade)

This past weekend, I attended another wonderful Coney Island Mermaid Parade in south Brooklyn. I met a lot of great people, including Terri (@ivyleagueink), who shared some amazing work, including this amazing owl covering her stomach:

She credited Peeko (@peekotattoos) from Pyramid Ink Tattoo (@pyramidink) in Brooklyn with this piece.

The quote, "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how," is by Friedrich Nietzsche, and pre-dates the owl. It was done at True Blue Tattoo in Maspeth, New York.

She also has this amazing portrait of the Bride of Frankenstein on her thigh:

Please pardon the shadow in the upper right part of the tattoo. That phenomenal piece was done by Shane O'Neill (@shaneoneilltattooist), who won Ink Master, Season One, and tattoos out of Infamous Tattoo in Delaware.

Andy Fakes Me Out

Check out this cool tattoo that I spotted at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade:

This is on the arm of Andy, from England.

Or, I should say, this was on his arm.

When I asked him about it, he snickered and told me it was a fake tattoo.

I'm still not convinced, but I guess if you really look at this, it doesn't quite look like a "real" tattoo.

Nonetheless, it's still notable that this is one of the finest temporary tattoos I have ever seen, as it fooled this veteran inkspotter.

Jasmine With Beautiful Flowers and Designs (at the Mermaid Parade)

Back in June, at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@MermaidParade), I met Jasmine, who had some stunning tattoos, including these beautiful flowers on her shoulder and arm:

Jasmine explained that she had studied design, and she loved textiles. Her tattoo artist, the incomparable Tim Kern (@ymonster), drew up this great tattoo that recalls fishnet and lace.
Tim, formerly of Tribulation Tattoo in NYC, now calls No Hope No Fear Tattoo Art Studio (@nohopenofeartattoo) in Portland, Oregon, his home.

A Lovely Citrus on Kristina (at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade)

Back in June, at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade), I met Kristina, who shared this lovely tattoo on her inner arm:

Kristina explained that this is a stylized cross section of an orange, a satsuma mandarin orange, to be exact. She told me that this is her favorite fruit and that, when she worked in a juice bar, she and her colleagues all got fruit tattoos.

Kristina credited Julia Hayes (@JHayesTattoos) with inking this piece when she was at Evil & Love Tattoo (@EvilandLove) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Julia is now working out of Trinity Tattoo Collective (@Trinity_Tattoo_Collective) in Ridgewood, Queens.

Jackie's Amazing Work by Boff Konkerz

Summer may be officially over but I still have lots of goodies to share, including this lovely work on Jackie, who I met at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@MermaidParade) in June:

Jackie (@jackattack101) is a tattoo artist and piercer in the United Kingdom, working out of Nutz Tattoo (@NutzTattoo) in Hertfordshire.

She credits the work to Boff Konkerz, a travelling machine-free artist who, according to his website, is currently working at The Icelandic Tattoo Corp in Reykjavik.

Mike's Tapestry Over His Heart

Summer is winding down, but we still have a lot of tattoos to share from the past several months, including this beauty from Mike, who I met at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade) back in June:

As Mike explained to me, there was a tapestry on the wall of his godmother's house. He took it to his tattoo artist, Magie Serpica (@magiseserpica.tattoo) and she put it over his heart.

Magie is an old friend of Tattoosday, and she owns and tattoos out of Milk and Honey Tattoo Parlour (@milkandhoneytattoo) in Staten Island, New York. Milk and Honey is notable, not only for its talented artists, but because it is a solely woman-owned shop in an industry that has few such businesses (although that number is growing).

Sierra's Seaworthy Tattoos at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Last month, at the 35th annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, I met Sierra, who was kind enough to share her appropriately-themed tattoos on her sides.

First, this octopus:

She credited this work to Siege (@siegeart) from Revival Art Collective (@revivalartcollective) in Phoenix, Arizona.

On the other side of her torso, she has this tattoo:

This one she credited to Moeh Haywood (@Moehskee) who tattoos out of Crimson Hilt Tattoo (@crimsonhiltattoo) in Denver.

Sierra told me the jellyfish and octopus tattoos are a nod to the fact that she studied marine biology.

Emory Shares Two Cool Tattoos

I met Emory last month at the 35th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade). She shared this cool tattoo:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Kentile Floors sign, this was a highly visible landmark perched high over the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.

Louie Ozomek (@louiescustomtattooing) at Hand of Glory Tattoo (@handofglorytattoo) in Brooklyn did a nice job replicating the sign on Emory' biceps.

The sign was dismantled in 2014, but Emory wanted to "preserve its memory" on her arm as a tribute to the familiar symbol that stood in Brooklyn for sixty-five years.

Emory also shared this piece on the back of her other arm:

She got this at Magic Cobra Tattoo Society (@magiccobratattoo) in Brooklyn, as part of a fundraiser called Party to Protect, in support of Planned Parenthood (@plannedparenthood).

Jill's Mermaid (35th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade)

This past Saturday, I went out to Coney Island to catch the 35th Annual Mermaid Parade (@medmaidparade). This annual tradition has been ideal for Tattoosday inkspotting and this year was a banner year, having interviewed a dozen or so folks with cool tattoos, which we'll be sharing in the weeks to come.

Our first contributor is Jill. who shared this theme-related piece:

Jill's daughter had a bit to do with this tattoo, especially the top section. "Make me a mermaid," she said, and Jill went to her artist, Timmy Cronin (@TimmyTattooCronin) from Timmy Tattoo in Huntington, New York.

"I like his style," Jill told me, and I have to agree. I actually met Timmy at a supermarket in Brooklyn seven years ago (recounted here) and have featured work from his shop a few times over the years.

Riding the Flamingo - Lacey Chooses Her Own Path (at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade)

I met Lacey at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade and her tattoo really jumped out at me. I was happy when she agreed to share her work with us here:

The bottom of the tattoo reads "We are made of Star Stuff," and the image is a stylized version of herself, riding her flamingo through outer space,

The quote is from Cosmos, and is an allusion to the fact that we are all products of The Big Bang, and that there is elements of the vast universe inside of each of us. It also represents, in Lacey's words, "being able to choose my own path."

The flamingo is also a nod to her home in Baltimore, especially the "kitschy" side of Baltimore. The Baltimore of John Waters.

The tattoo was created and inked by Andrea Vitale-Lathe at Have Fun Be Lucky Tattoo (@havefunbelucky). in Baltimore. Lacey said she "connected immediately" with Andrea and that this made getting tattooed by her all the more meaningful.
