Two Incredible Thigh Tattoos

Working through our archives, I stumbled across the following two tattoos, on Lindsay, spotted at the 2018 United Ink (@united_ink) Summer Vibe Tattoo Convention on Long Island:

This woman and wolf tattoo on Lindsay's right thigh was done by Igor Puente (@theredcrownmagic), formerly of 10 Thousand Foxes Tattoo (@10thousandfoxestattoonyc) in New York City. Igor currently works out of Dark Mark Tattoo (@darkmarktattoo) in Keene, New Hampshire.

Lindsay also had this incredible geisha tattoo on her left thigh:

This incredible work was done by Samantha Frederick (@sami_lynne) out of Depiction Tattoo Gallery (@depictiontattoos) in Arlington, Texas.

Thanks to Lindsay for sharing these awesome tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

Total Eclipse of the Art

Back on August 21, 2017, I met Michelle near Bowling Green in lower Manhattan. Everyone was out experiencing the solar eclipse, and I started talking to her about her cool tattoos.

An artist she only identified as Alex from the Bronx, was responsible for this work on her arm:

She also credited Giovanny from Rebel Ink Tattoos (@rebel_ink_tattoo) in Queens with the following work on her leg:

Thanks to Michelle for sharing her work with us here on Tattoosday!

Kelsy's Dinosaur Skull Illustrates a Point (Tattoosday Goes to Philly)

Toward the end of my day at the 20th Annual Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention (@villainarts) earlier this month, I met Kelsy, who shared this cool tattoo:

It's pretty self-explanatory, stating "Women Inherit the Earth" with a dinosaur skull crisply illustrating the point.

Kelsy credited Alicia Thomas (@aliciathomas_art) from Boston Tattoo Company (@bostontattoocompany) in Somerville, Massachusetts with the work.

Thanks to Kelsy for sharing this new tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Blair Shares Some Amazing Art (at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade)

On this rainy Sunday, we're heading back to the summer and looking for a little sunshine. It seems appropriate to share some work from the Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade), from a participant named Blair, who had some phenomenal tattoos, including this on her thigh:

Blair told me this is a Bert Grimm design called "Sundance" that was tattooed by Becca Genné-Bacon (@beccagennebacon) from Kings Avenue Tattoo (@kingsavetattoo) on the Bowery.

Here's the Bert Grimm artwork that is an iconic piece of tattoo history:

She also shared this piece called "Prisoner of Love," which was done by Benjamin Haft (@benjaminhaft) from Allied Tattoo (@allied_tattoo) in Brooklyn:

I also snapped a photo of this tattoo, of a stunning gypsy with her hair in rollers:

All amazing tattoos!

Thanks to Blair for sharing her awesome work with us here on Tattoosday!

Emory Shares Two Cool Tattoos

I met Emory last month at the 35th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade (@mermaidparade). She shared this cool tattoo:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Kentile Floors sign, this was a highly visible landmark perched high over the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.

Louie Ozomek (@louiescustomtattooing) at Hand of Glory Tattoo (@handofglorytattoo) in Brooklyn did a nice job replicating the sign on Emory' biceps.

The sign was dismantled in 2014, but Emory wanted to "preserve its memory" on her arm as a tribute to the familiar symbol that stood in Brooklyn for sixty-five years.

Emory also shared this piece on the back of her other arm:

She got this at Magic Cobra Tattoo Society (@magiccobratattoo) in Brooklyn, as part of a fundraiser called Party to Protect, in support of Planned Parenthood (@plannedparenthood).

Thanks to Emory for sharing her cool tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

A Woman and a Wolf

On Friday evening, I was standing on the subway platform at Columbus Circle, headed to Central Park, when I looked over and saw a young woman with a stunning tattoo on her thigh.

As the train approached, there was not much time for discussion. I gave her my card and asked if I could take a picture of the tattoo. She consented:

Even though the top of the wolf headdress is covered by fabric, you can still see what a stunning tattoo this is.

I did not get the name of the woman who shared the tattoo, but she did have time to credit her artist, Marc Fischer (@marcfischertattooist) who works out of PechSchwarz Tattoo (@pechschwarztattoo) in Berlin.

I would add that this seems an appropriate tattoo to share on this special day, July 31, for we are marking our 9th anniversary today. Nine years blogging about tattoo spotted on the streets of New York City!

It is exactly for encounters like this, a brief exchange of praise and information about someone's tattoo, that this site was conceived and it is the friendliness and willingness of strangers to share that has sustained us over the years.

I humbly thank all of our contributors, and all of our fans, who continue to support and sustain this little tattoo blog as we march onward toward our tenth anniversary next summer.

Mirko's Tattoo Looks Through Us

Earlier this month I met Mirko on Wall Street - he's a chef at a nearby restaurant, and he shared this stunning tattoo:

Mirko got this because he just loved the artwork. He credited artist Loco Dharma (@locodharma) from Dharma Tattoo (@dharmatattoostudio) in Miami.

Thanks to Mirko for sharing this beautiful tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Aaron's Inner Arm Awesomeness

The following tattoo from Aaron was spotted last September outside of Federal Hall in lower Manhattan:

I wish I could tell you more about this, like the artist and shop, but this post's recording was lost and I had no way to follow-up with Aaron about his work.

Thanks to Aaron for sharing this cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Sven and the Woman with a Bandanna

I really love the international flavor of the tattoos I have been spotting down on Wall Street this summer. I recently approached a gentleman from Germany, named Sven, after spotting a Banksy tattoo on his leg. He didn't share the Banksy, but did offer up this stunning piece on the back of his left calf:

He credited this to Fabio from Lower West Side Tattoo Studio in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Sven told me "I wanted a girl with a bandanna ... I like the difference ...nice girl, sweet girl, bad bandanna. I like the contrast ... she has wonderful eyes."

Indeed, the beautiful woman with the bandanna transforming her into an outlaw, creates a great juxtaposition and makes for a fantastic tattoo.

Thanks to Sven for sharing this awesome tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

The Tattooed Poets Project: dawn lonsinger

Our next tattooed poet is dawn lonsinger, who sent this photo of her tattoo to us:

I'll let dawn tell the tale of the ink:
"This tattoo marks and means many things to me, some of which is hard to articulate. I am enchanted by it/her oppositions. She is exposed and protected, vulnerable and multiple, sensitive and sensual. I identify with her . . . with her quiet hunger (her insatiability as represented by her vampire teeth), her dangerous otherness, her up-out-of the ocean and/or space and/or myth appearance, her antennae-attention to unseeable modes of meaning, her inward-looking third eye, her protective-yet-communicative gear, her animal eyes, her medusa predicament, and perhaps most of all: her faraway look of longing. It's a condition: the human condition. She knows about the wetness of darkness and spooky action at a distance. The symbol on her helmet is the alchemical symbol for copper, which is a metal with great connecting and thermal power, and is the most common conduit for electricity . . . and I believe in electricity, especially inside and between people. Copper has also been linked to water and Venus, thus receptivity and magnetism and sensuality born of sea-foam, and I am--as my poems divulge--complicit with the vagaries of the ocean . . . and with chaos (i.e., life) in general. Also, in Mesopotamia mirrors were made of polished copper and in metaphysical parlance it's said to 'align the subtle bodies,' which I love.
Also this hybridized woman is meant to allude to the Oankali from Octavia Butler's Dawn, an alien race covered with sensory tentacles which directly connect them to other organisms, nerve system to nerve system, giving them the ability to read unconscious/unspoken human emotions and desires. Oankali can also hear human heartbeats at a distance, a skill I apprentice and aspire toward. I teach a course on Monstrosity in Literature and Film and have an affection for the swamp thing who drags her/him/itself into town in search of love . . . and when I got this tattoo, less than a year ago, I was experiencing lots of transitions, felt myself to be that swamp thing. I got the tattoo at Anchor Ink in Salt Lake City from Casey, who did such a beautiful job of getting all the subtlety of line, reflection, and meaning I wanted."
To add a little perspective, here's another view:

dawn shared the following poem, which was originally published in Western Humanities Review and appears in her book Whelm:

[ruin is a thing that happens in the past]

rain spreads like a negligee over everything—

My longing is a forest, and your voice is all the birds
that live there, are hushed in the rain. Let me learn
the candor of falling, the open-endedness of roofs,
how to knot my fingers with earth and let go, how
to put down the unending letter. When I look out into
the porcelain night, see all the fissures widening—
beauty shattering in deep magenta alleyways, I long
for the moxy of the torrential. The old men in doorways
speak in a language we cannot know
of how to slice evenly down the belly of a fish.

The children keep darting out into the lightning,
tempting the gods to tackle them. The rain is making
a case—that baptism, that flush. That the stars will
never belly up. That luster is, of course, an antidote
to our eyes, and we are no more purgatorial than
the pools underneath it all, catching the seemingly endless
runoff, dirty as all get out. When it stops we go outside,
electrified with silvery dampness, and stare down into
the puddles. We see only the sanity of suggestion,
the torn sleeve of time, evidence that we are not
yet ghosts—all echo and ripple and swig.

dawn lonsinger is the author of Whelm (winner of the 2012 Idaho Prize in Poetry). Her poems and lyric essays have appeared in American Poetry Review, Black Warrior Review, Guernica, Crazyhorse, Colorado Review, Subtropics, Best New Poets, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA from Cornell University, a PhD from the University of Utah, and is a Professor of Creative Writing & Literature at Muhlenberg College, and an Assistant Poetry Editor for Anti- and an Associate Editor at Tupelo Quarterly. She is a fan of lightning, love, haunting, and chutzpah. You can find out more at: www.dawnlonsinger.com.

Thanks to dawn for sharing her tattoo and poem with us here on Tattoosday's Tattooed Poets Project!

Sarah Shares Two Beautiful Tattoos

Back in July 2013, I was at the New York City Poetry Festival on Governor's Island, and I met several people with great tattoos.

I saw a woman with some incredible work as she was leaving the event, and managed to speak to her before she had walked away.

Sarah shared two spectacular pieces, both by the talented Nalla Smith at Brooklyn's Goose Tattoo Parlor.

First is this piece on her calf:

Sarah explained this:
"This [Bird Girl] came from a Brazilian artist ... it was done in early 2011 and I was just browsing around on tumblr, a site called Art for Adults. It's mostly kinda like risque and women, but with all drawn and everything and then I just kind of randomly stumbled across this artist, I don’t remember the exact name but she’s Brazilian and then I messaged her asking if it was okay to use the image … she was really sweet and said ya just please send me a picture when you’re done and everything … and then so I just thought it was a really beautiful image … I know everyone has different reasons for getting tattoos, but for me, it was my first one and was super sentimental … after that … I almost felt like I couldn't really top this one, like the sentimentality, so I’d almost rather have something that was really beautiful and had a different purpose other than that..."
Sarah also shared this piece from her thigh:

Sarah elaborated:
"...Her name is Octavia, the artist for the original drawing is Courtney Brims, she’s Australian, not that it has anything to do with it but she’s from the same part of Australia where I used to live … like fast forward 6 years …  I just saw it again, a really beautiful image, and actually [in] the original artwork ... she’s blonde and obviously that doesn't translate all that well to a tattoo
© Courtney Brims
... Nalla took a lot of ... liberty with the coloring and everything and it was so funny because he was, at the very last second ... going to be about 45 minutes of shading and then ... he said ‘let’s go dark’ and then that turned into about 3 and a half hours and I almost passed out during it … not too much of a story behind that … it’s quite big and the reason for that is because I didn't tell him how big I wanted it, I trusted him to just do his thing … because he knew what the appropriate size was … I just knew that he would do a good job and even the placement is not like straight on and everything … he’s very good at placing tattoos."
Thanks to Sarah for sharing her beautiful tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!
