Taylor's Undersea Tattoo

Last month, I spotted Taylor shopping at a local drug store in Brooklyn, on a particularly warm day. She had this cool thigh tattoo and was kind enough to share it with us:

Taylor explained, "I've just always loved fish, mermaids, the ocean," noting that the mermaid is "purple for my grandma, because that's her favorite color." She also added, "we've got Hank from Finding Dory up in there." Those unfamiliar with the film should not Hank is the octopus.

Taylor credited the work to Erica Flannes (@ericaflannes) at Red Rocket Tattoo (@redrockettattoo) in Manhattan.

Catherine's Marine Life Leg (Tattoosday Goes to Philly)

Last month, at the 20th Annual Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention (@villainarts), I met Catherine, who had an amazingly colorful right leg:

That's a sea turtle and a jellyfish and, on the back of her calf, is this blue-ringed octopus:

Catherine credited the work to Steve De Los Reyes (@stevedelosreyes) from Ink Kings Tattoo in Otsego, Minnesota.

She explained that the blue-ringed octopus and the jellyfish are two of the most poisonous creatures in the ocean. However, she pointed out, the sea turtle can withstand these animals dangerous venom. She transplants that fact to her own life, and pulls strength from the image of the sea turtle.

Sierra's Seaworthy Tattoos at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Last month, at the 35th annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, I met Sierra, who was kind enough to share her appropriately-themed tattoos on her sides.

First, this octopus:

She credited this work to Siege (@siegeart) from Revival Art Collective (@revivalartcollective) in Phoenix, Arizona.

On the other side of her torso, she has this tattoo:

This one she credited to Moeh Haywood (@Moehskee) who tattoos out of Crimson Hilt Tattoo (@crimsonhiltattoo) in Denver.

Sierra told me the jellyfish and octopus tattoos are a nod to the fact that she studied marine biology.

Sandy and Her Sea Leg

Back in May, I spotted Sandy on Broad Street in lower Manhattan. The bright burst of color on her left leg is spectacular and I was thrilled when she agreed to let me take a picture:

From the starfish on her foot, to the sea turtle and jellyfish on her thigh, the color and detail are truly remarkable:

Sandy told me, "I'm actually doing a foot-to-shoulder piece. I'm gonna do water, then land and sky and it's basically things that I'd done with my husband who passed away, so it's kinda like a tribute."

This work was done by Frankie Oneshot (@frankieoneshot) at Bullseye Tattoos (@bullseyetattooshop) in Staten Island.

We're hoping that we'll be privy to more of Sandy's work in the future.

Harlie Celebrates the Day of Outrageous Flair with a Jellyfish Tattoo

Two weeks ago, I met Harlie in Sheridan Square in the West Village.

I was hanging out with my wife and some friends after visiting Holey Donuts when Harlie walked up and started talking to friends nearby. The tattoo on the back of her left calf prompted me to ask her about it:

Harlie credited this piece to Ian at All Star Tattoos in Tacoma, Washington. "I brought him a bunch of different types of jellyfish," she explained. She is from Tacoma and elaborated, "I just grew up on a bay that had a lot of jellyfish and it's nostalgic for me and I think they're beautiful creatures."

She also shared this small tattoo on her wrist:

This was also inked at All Star, but by another artist named Ryan. Harlie explained that this design is from a book called The Secret Language of Birthdays and that this symbol represents her birthday, May 16, also known as the "Day of Outrageous Flair."

It seemed fitting that I save this post for today, which is Harlie's birthday, the Day of Outrageous Flair.

Gatsie Shares an Undersea Half-Sleeve and Some Additional Work from Royal Street Tattoo

Back in June, I met Gatsie on the West 4th Street subway platform in Manhattan. It was this, her undersea half-sleeve, that first caught my eye:

Gatsie told me that this work featuring sea turtles, jellyfish and a shark, was originally a cover-up and it was done by Matt Skinner at Royal Street Tattoo in Mobile, Alabama.

Gatsie was kind enough to send me some other pieces she's had done at Royal Street, as well. Needless to say, she's a huge supporter of the shop.

Her other arm hosts this phoenix by Kelly "Pony" Stephenson:

She also sent me this piece from her back:

This literary tattoo features Edgar Allan Poe and some ravens. This was done at Royal Street, as well, by Pete Anderson.

Veronica Reveals What's Under Her Sleeve

Running an errand in SoHo two weeks ago found me hopping on an R train at Canal Street, which is not my normal routine. Sometimes a break in a routine can be rewarding.

Sitting on the train was Veronica, who had this intriguing ink running out from under her left shirt sleeve:

What is that? I wondered. A tree? Curious, I asked her about it and was rewarded with not only the answer, but a photo of a pretty spectacular tattoo:

Veronica explained that she had seen an exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta that featured jellyfish with really cool lighting effects that brought out these sea creatures fluorescence. She went to see Gustavo Rizerio at Invisible NYC and this beautiful tattoo was the end result. Here's a clip of what she was talking about:

I also learned, coincidentally, while talking to Veronica, that her sister Leyna, had appeared here on Tattoosday back in June 2010!
