Ashley's Incredible Eye Tattoo

This past fall, I met Ashley near Wall Street in lower Manhattan. Not everyone I meet lets me photograph their work on the spot. Some folks, like Ashley, send me pictures after they've checked out the site.

This is the amazing tattoo Ashley shared with me:

She wanted to share this piece because she thinks the artist "deserves a tremendous amount of credit."

Indeed he does!

This is the handiwork of Christian Lucca (@christian_lucca), who inked this at Starlight Tattoo (@starlighttattoo17) in Rochelle Park, New Jersey. He's now at Silk City Tattoo (@silkcitytattoo) in Hawthorne, New Jersey.

Ashley tells us her tattoo

"... is an eye with a customized clock in the center.

I have always loved Christian’s work as an artist and he’s great at customizing a grungy feel. I wanted an eye to be the start of my sleeve because I wanted something in the center to really pop. Eyes are the window to the soul which I’ve always believed to be true. I wanted the arms on the clock to be off the roman numerals because as they say, time isn’t real. It’s supposed to have more of a reflection affect."

Lee Shares a Joey Knuckles Original

Last month at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, I spotted this tattoo on the back of Lee's calf:

Lee told me "the tattoo was done by Joey Knuckles (Instagram here) ... he is an amazing artist and he enjoys his work." Lee got this work done in Philadelphia a while back and added, "I really like how he uses bright colors and strong shading in his tattoos."

A New Awakening

At the beginning of the week, Summer was still clinging to the Northeast, which meant that there were still tattoos to be spotted out in the sunshine.

Monday afternoon, I noticed a woman in the plaza outside of Borders with a cool ring of flames and a lion tattooed around her ankle.

When I approached her about it, she was kind of down on the piece, saying the guy who did it out in Huntington, NY overcharged her and messed it up. It still looked pretty cool to me.

She also showed me her first tattoo, a star in a circle, on her lower back.

However, the third tattoo, which I hadn't seen until she pushed her hair back from her neck, was her favorite. That was the one she liked the best:


She gave her name as "Marla," which she acknowledged wasn't her real name. She slipped later and said what her real name was, but I will honor her desire to be anonymously misidentified.

Marla had her piece inked by Cheryl at Ink Alternative in Ronkonkoma, NY. She spoke nothing but praise about the shop. Marla was thrilled to not only let me photograph her tattoo, but was excited when I showed it back to her on my camera as she hadn't seen it in a while.

Marla said she had the tattoo done after getting through a hard time and that it represented "a new awakening". The symbolism of the sun and the tears represented the moving on from the difficulty she had just gone through.
