Sarah Nichols, the Peacock and the Cobra (The Tattooed Poets Project)

Today's tattooed poet is Sarah Nichols, who shared this cobra-peacock mashup:

Sarah tells us:
"This is my first tattoo. I had it done in February, 2017, right before my 43 rd
birthday; I had wanted one for a long time, but it always seemed like the time or the money wasn’t right. It was done at Witchhouse Tattoo (@witchhousetattoo) in Hartford, Connecticut, by Courtney (@czar_baebatron) , the shop’s owner. The tattoo is a cobra with a peacock’s head, and it is after the work of artist James Prosek (@jamesprosek), specifically a drawing entitled The Peacock and The Cobra. For me, both animals are elegant and fierce; as a hybrid creature, it is beautiful and strange, and that comes across in the tattoo."
Sarah also shared the following poem, which is from her chapbook of Sylvia Plath/C.D. Wright centos, She May Be a Saint, which was published in 2016.

Other Bodies

In my flammable skin,
I grow shadows.

Blood, substanceless.
An arm
a face
birthmarks.

A box of poison
too pure for longings.

A body,
flickering.

My new instrument.

The Sleeves of Annie and Griffin

Back in September, I met a couple, Annie and Griffin, walking in lower Manhattan. They were fully-sleeved and, although I don't often feature sleeves because they are hard to truly capture in a two-dimension setting, their work was remarkable.

First up is Annie, whose work was done by Kahlil Rintye (@kahlilrintye) at Ed Hardy's Tattoo City (@tattoo_city) in San Francisco.

Annie told me she has a Japanese aesthetic and that she just told Kahlil what she wanted and he designed it:

That rooster and colorful sleeve are really quite beautiful!

Annie's travelling companion Griffin, on the other hand, had a sleeve in black and gray, inspired by the work of HR Giger (@giger_art).

He referred to the figure above as his guardian angel.

Griffin's work was by Dustin Burt (@dustinburtart) at Sugar City Tattoo (@sugarcitytattoo) in Crockett, California.

Thanks to Annie and Griffin for sharing their sleeves with us here on Tattoosday!

Angela, a Peacock and Sisterly Feathers

Today is my sister Alicia's birthday and, although she doesn't have any tattoos, she loves peacocks, and this story involves a sister, so it seemed an appropriate post for the occasion.

Back in May, I was in Herndon, Virginia, for a work training and I was hanging out with one of my colleagues, Angela, who has lots of ink, including this lovely peacock and pair of butterflies on her back:

Angela credited Daniel Baker (@danielbakertattoos) from Tattoorolo in Corning, New York, with this lovely work.

She also has the lovely feather on her leg:

Angela explained first about the feather, which she got inked up n Rochester:
"My sister and I were getting matching tattoos and ... we went with a feather idea and she didn't care what feather and I said well I'd really like just a peacock feather.  Since I got the peacock tattoo on my back ... people are inundating me with peacock stuff, family and friends ... I like it. So I was like I just want an individual feather. She wasn't 100% wanting an individual feather and she loves octopus, so she got an octopus tentacle on her leg in the same spot, but in the middle of the octopus tentacle, she got a design that looks like the eye of the peacock feather ... so that was out 'matching' sister tattoos, if you will, with our own individuality in the tattoos."
Angela sent me a photo of the companion tattoos below:

Thanks to Angela for sharing her cool tattoos with us here on Tattoosday, and for letting me share them on my sister's birthday too!

"The Peacock Is Me"

Yesterday I was participating in the 2016 AIDS Walk in Central Park when I looked to my right and saw this amazing tattoo:

Well, of course, I had to go over and introduce myself and ask about this.

The tattoo belongs to Chris and he had this done by Lynn at Dutchman Tattoo in Bohemia, New York, out on Long Island.

Chris told me, "I love peacocks ... we both drew a peacock and used the best of them to come up with the rest of it ... the peacock IS me."

Thanks to Chris for sharing his awesome peacock with us here on Tattoosday!

Sarah's Cool Peacock

Back in September, after a great night out in Manhattan at a poetry reading, followed by some good beer at West Village watering hole, I stumbled on this lovely tattoo on the West 4th Street subway platform:

This lovely watercolor peacock belongs to Sarah, and I didn't have a chance to ask her about the tattoo, as her train was rolling in after I took the photo. Fortunately for us, she emailed a few days later and filled me in:
My tattooist is Paul Ciaravino, an independent artist and friend of
mine based out of Prospect Heights.
The tattoo is based on a piece of art that was generated for a music
festival I attended several years ago in Tennessee. The festival was
one of the most enriching experiences of my life, and affirmed my love
affair with music.
I believe she is referring to this My Morning Jacket poster from the 2011 Bonnaroo Festival:

Here's another angle of the tattoo:

Chasity Shares Two for Tattoosday (at the NYC Tattoo Convention)

I met Chasity at the NYC Tattoo Convention last month and she shared two distinct tattoos with me. Since it's Tuesday, we might as well celebrate two tattoos, no?

First is this cool black and gray mermaid, complete with octopus parasol, located on Chasity's thigh:

Chasity "grew up by the sea," so this acknowledges her upbringing. The design was inspired by the work of New Orleans-based artist Marrus, based on two pieces of art she purchased while living there. The tattoo was inked by Amy Shapiro at Three Kings Tattoo in Brooklyn.

Chasity also loves birds, especially peacocks, so she has this gorgeous one on her arm:

Chasity credits Amy Shapiro for this beauty, as well, but notes it was done at Graceland Brooklyn, before Amy moved on to Three Kings.

I found a photo of this work that really highlights the talent and artistry involved in this tattoo on Amy's website:

Dale's Legs (at the NYC Tattoo Convention)

Last month at the NYC Tattoo Convention, I met Dale, whose colorful calves jumped out across the room:

That Day of the Dead sugar skull is pretty darn spectacular. And the Day of the Dead art on the back of the left calf is equally awesome:

Dale said she loves olorful work and just happened to be in the company of her daughter, Mandy Fabrizi, the artist "who did most of [the work]." Mandy works out of Clockwork Tattoo in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Thanks to Dale for sharing her cool tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

Some of Amanda's Ink at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade

I met Amanda at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade back in June. She shared a bunch of her tattoos, like these on her right arm:

A little more detail:

The peacock and the gypsy are really lovely.

Amanda also has this sugar skull:

And this super cat and fiddle on her left arm:

She credited all of the work shown here to her artist Eric Edward from Hudson River Tattoo in Hudson, New York.

Amanda's tattoos are art for art's sake. As for the cat and the fiddle, she told me, ""It was just a fantastic piece that was just pretty unique and then we just fine-tuned him and then just worked on integrating everything."

Thanks to Amanda for sharing her tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

An Unusual Peacock from Sweden

Sometimes tattoos are just destined to be on Tattoosday, I think.

For example, yesterday, I was wandering around downtown Manhattan on my lunch break when I spotted a pretty interesting tattoo on someone's back. However, she walked off before I could speak to her.

A half an hour later, I was six blocks away at the corner of Pearl and Broadway when she walked by me again. this time, I was able to speak to the tattoo owner and snap this photo:

This tattoo belongs to Johanna (she pronounced it Yo-hah-na), who was visiting from Sweden. Her artist is there, as well, and that was pretty much all she told me.

This is not your typical peacock tattoo, which is why I liked it and was so happy to see it again.

Johanna, thanks for sharing your awesome tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

The Tattooed Poets Project: Amy MacLennan

Late last month, I received an inquiry from Amy MacLennan about the Tattooed Poets Project. April was already full, but she was kind enough to agree to be another Tattooed Poet o' the Week. Check out her work:

That's a mirror image and is a little blurry, so let's take a close look and hear about the work.

Amy tells us:
"The original tattoo was done in a London studio by the artist Bugs in 1992. He agreed to do the design freehand with the stipulation that I brought him a peacock feather. I was working in a cheap youth hostel at the time, but a friend managed to find the feather for me. I remember that Bugs told me to drink a lot of water and eat something sugary after. I drank a blended mango drink and then had a good cry with a friend, and later that night got drunk on stout. The tattoo has had two color touch-ups, but I've never had the design changed."
Bugs is a phenomenal artist who is respected worldwide. We've featured some of his work before when we've spotted it at the NYC Tattoo Convention in years past (most recently here).

The floral part of her back is actually comprised of two different tattoos of flowers:

Amy told us that the small flowers were tattooed in 2012 "by Kory Kidd at Epic Ink in Medford, Oregon." She explained, "I wanted something flowery and red/coral toned. Kory worked with me endlessly to get the design and color right."

As for the large flower, she elaborates:
"In 2013, Kory added this one. I wanted to cover a small, grey salamander that I'd had done in the Fillmore in 1990 when I was young and desperately stupid when it came to tattoos. My intentions for a first tattoo had been good, but my choice of tattoo artist was not. I needed more color and balance to the work already done."
If Amy wasn't generous enough to share her tattoos, she also gave us a poem, which originally appeared in February 2014 in the 30/30 Project from Tupelo Press:

Heat and Hunger

You kiss the top of one shoulder,
a run of your lips across the strip
where my bra strap hits.
I trace circles at the place
your fingers meet your hand,
stroke the mild webbing there.
A dainty scorching
of each other's skin,
such a delicate devouring.

Amy MacLennan lives and writes in Ashland, Oregon. She has been published in Hayden's Ferry Review, River Styx, Linebreak, Cimarron Review, Painted Bride Quarterly, Folio, and Rattle. Her second chapbook, Weathering, was published by Uttered Chaos Press in early 2012. She has a poem appearing in the anthology Myrrh, Mothwing, Smoke: Erotic Poems that was published by Tupelo Press in March 2013. Her article 'Social Networking and Poetry Publishing' appeared in the 2011 Poet's Market. You can find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/amy.maclennan.

Thanks to Amy for contributing to the Tattooed Poets Project, beyond April, here on Tattoosday!

Familiar Ink: Meister Returns to Tattoosday with an Awesome NYC Tattoo

There's something therapeutic about running posts of work I spotted over the summer. The warmth from these encounters is brightening these winter days.

Case in point, on a bike ride out to Coney Island, I was cruising along the boardwalk when I spotted a woman on a bench, reading a book. She had tattoos so, naturally, I stopped.

It was after I introduced myself that she recognized me, and I saw the sparrows on the backs of her calves. This was Meister, who had contributed back in January 2012 here.

Meister blogs at The Nervous Cook and is a food writer and coffee columnist. Now, she is a repeat subject on Tattoosday. I first met her in December 2011 on 23rd Street and 7th Avenue in Manhattan. Here we were, 19 months later, in another borough and another season.

What would have been impossible to see in the winter, was now visible in the summer, and Meister rolled up her shorts and shared this awesome tattoo on her thigh:

This is, if you look at it closely, an aerial view of world-famous Central Park. Meister explained:
"It's a map of Central Park, with some birds, and a little squirrely-o ... I love Central Park, it's my favorite part of New York City and I wanted to honor it ...it's my home. And on the other [thigh] I plan to get a lake in my husband's home town, which is Oklahoma City, to finish it off, my last piece, but I've been hesitating because it will be my last piece of work..."

In addition to the red-tailed hawk and the New York City pigeon, there's a peacock because, as Meister explained, "I was running past the park the day that the peacock escaped" from the Central Park Zoo. You can re-visit that newsworthy event here.

Like her previous work featured here, Meister had this done by Myles Karr. If you're going to stick with one artist, Myles is among the best to choose from. He's currently with the amazing shop Three Kings Tattoo, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Myles and the good people at Three Kings have had work featured on Tattoosday many times before. Click here to see everything from Myles on Tattoosday and here to see all the work from Three Kings we've showcased.

Checking Out Patti's New Sleeve

Last year we got a pleasant surprise from a reader named Patti, who shared a stunning floral sleeve, which we posted in September.

One of the problems with interviewing people with sleeves is that it is hard to document the great work, especially when I've met them on the street. Even a collage of sleeve segments doesn't always do justice to the amazing workmanship and detail that goes into the hours of creating a sleeve.

Fortunately for me, and by extension, you the readers of Tattoosday, Patti has stayed in touch, and she just sent me the link to a YouTube video chronicling her new peacock sleeve. Check it out:

Patti's amazing work was done by Ben Reigle (who also composed the music in the clip) at Blueprint Gallery in Hadley, Massachusetts.

Thanks to Patti for keeping me posted on her new sleeve!

Felicia Shares a Cool Peacock and an Homage to Her Favorite Horror Films

A few months back, I met a woman named Felicia in Penn Station. She has several tattoos, but she offered up this particular peacock from her forearm:

Felicia credited this to an artist named Thor at Three Monkeys Tattoo in downtown San Diego. I wasn't able to track down either the artist or the shop, so I may have misheard, but I guess that's beside the point.

In the end, we have an original peacock that differs from a lot of the more realistic attempts at peafowl we have seen in the past.

Felicia also sent me this piece a few weeks after meeting her:

Felicia explains:
"I told you I'd send over my favorite tattoo, which I had hidden under tights at the time. See attached for a photo of the tattoo after it was freshly done [top], and then a photo of what it looks like now [bottom]. This is the cover art for the film Suspiria, one of my all time favorite horror movies. I came up with the concept of creating a blackout piece behind my calf, and decided Suspiria was definitely a film worthy enough to cover such a large amount of space."

Thanks to Felicia for sharing her work with us here on Tattoosday!

Amy's Stunning Peacock Tattoo

Sometimes, my little camera just doesn't cut it - like on a late summer afternoon with a bright sun low on the horizon.

I met Amy as she walked passed my office back in August. I caught up to her just as she was about to go into Penn Station and I snapped these photos of her peacock half-sleeve:

Amy credited her artist Benjamin Harris at Sink the Ink Tattoo & Body Piercing, which has locations in Doylestown and Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Amy says Ben has "been my one and only tattoo artist for years and he's great"!

And, fortunately for us, Sink the Ink had a great photo of this tattoo up on their website:

Two Peacocks for a Tuesday

Back in June, I met two women on separate days who had peacock tattoos.

First was Charlotte, a filmmaker who I spotted on the uptown 3 train. I snapped these pictures when we got off the subway at 72nd Street:

Charlotte credited Daniel Albrigo as the artist, who did this when he worked at Brooklyn Adorned. He now tattoos out of Three Kings in Brooklyn.

She explained that she "wanted something beautiful to offset the Kali tattoo on her right shoulder".

A week later I met Emily near Penn Station, who had this different perspective on the peacock, inked on her calf:

Emily explained:
"My mother used to work at a school in Dallas, Texas, where I'm from, that has peacocks that roam wild on campus ... when I was a child I used to go play with them (or just watch them)."
Emily told me she "drew it and designed it with the help of Dave Wallin." Dave tattooed this when working at Tattoo Culture in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, but he now works out of Eight of Swords Tattoo Studio.

Thanks to both Charlotte and Emily for sharing their very different peacocks here on Tattoosday!

Darya's Bi-Coastal Peacock and Cherry Blossoms

I met Darya coming out of the subway in Bay Ridge and asked if I could take a picture of her tattoo. She kindly allowed me to do so and share it here with everyone on Tattoosday:

Darya explained that she always wanted a peacock tattoo, and she has fourteen tattoos in all (not all peacocks). Joe Maggs at Brooklyn Ink tattooed the peacock.

The cherry blossoms, symbols of regeneration, were added by Illya at Studio City Tattoos in California.

Thanks to Darya for sharing her tattoos from both coasts here on Tattoosday!

Sharon's Bird on a Saturday

At the end of September, I spotted this bird on the left side of Sharon's upper back:

Sharon drew this herself and had it tattooed at Fat Cat Tattoo in Sacramento, California.

I'd love to tell you more about this tattoo, but Sharon never e-mailed me to give me more details. Nonetheless, it's some nice work.

Thanks to Sharon for sharing her bird with us here on Tattoosday!

Jackie's Vintage Postcard

I caught up to Jackie after she passed me in Penn Station and I was delighted when she agreed to share her tattoo with us:

It's a truly remarkable piece, and I was thrilled to hear it was tattooed by the amazingly talented Amanda Wachob at Dare Devil Tattoo in New York City. She is well-known for an amazing eye for detail for tattoos that appear as if they were just painted on. I mean, look at this delicate touch on the back side of the piece:

Jackie explained that the tattoo is inspired by art in a book of vintage, early 1900's postcards that she found from Pleiades Press. She credited S. Solomko as the artist who created the original piece which inspired this tattoo.

She loved the vintage appearance of the original and Asked Amanda to recreate that feel.

She also loves, from an artistic perspective, the female form, and the sensuality of the peacock feathers fanning out at the bottom of the tattoo.

Again, I can't help but marvel at Amanda's artistry and how she paints on a tattoo:

Thanks again to Jackie for sharing her amazing tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Garrett's Peacock Recalls the South

I met Garrett back in June in Penn Station when I was still reeling from the loss of my camera.

I had yet to replace my photographic equipment and I had yet to receive the loaner from my awesome friend Jill.

So, I did the best I could with a flash-less BlackBerry camera to capture Garrett's awesome sleeve:

Yes, folks, it's another peacock in our midst, in a summer during which we have been treated to a variety of peafowl.

Garrett's choice to get this tattoo stems from his love of these birds, combined with an appreciation of fashion, and how the peacock speaks to that sensibility. He also likes how the males are the fairer of the two sexes.

What's especially remarkable is that this is a black and gray tattoo, with no plans to take on any color ink.

The inclusion of magnolias, azaleas and violets, all in homage to the South, make this potentially dizzyingly colorful tattoo more remarkable in its basic palette. Rather than explosions of color, we are rewarded with subtleties of shading.

Credit goes to Myles Karr at Three Kings Tattoo in Brooklyn. Work from Myles has previously appeared here on Tattoosday.

Thanks to Garrett for sharing his amazing tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!
