Martin's Tattoos Are Out of This World

I met Martin in Union Square last fall and he shared a couple of really cool tattoos:

This piece was done by David Côté at Imperial Tattoo Connexion (@imperialtattooconnexion) in Montreal. "I really just liked this guy's work," Martin told me, "he does really cool spaceships and stuff."

Martin also had this really neat take on Our Lady of Guadalupe:

Martin explained the origin of this piece:
"I was raised in a Catholic household, but I'm not necessarily believing in it now. I still like the imagery and being really into aliens and stuff, I just kind of like tried to combine [the two] to make it my own."
He credited the artist Ross Jones (@rosskjones) with this cool tattoo. Ross works out of Idle Hand Tattoo (@idlehandsf) in San Francisco, but Martin got the tattoo here on the East Coast when Ross did a guest spot at a local shop.

Thanks to Martin for sharing his tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

Edwardo's Lady of Guadalupe

Yesterday I met Edwardo outside of Federal Hall in lower Manhattan, and he shared this tattoo on his right forearm:

Edwardo explained that this is Our Lady of Guadalupe (click on the tag at the end of the post to see other similar tattoos we have featured over the years).

He added that this was a cover-up - there had originally been an M-16 inked on his arm, and he joked, if you look carefully, you can barely make out the rifle peeking out from Guadalupe's skirt.

Edwardo credited the work to Brazilian artist J.P, Rodrigues (@jprodriguesnyc) from Acqua Santa Tattoo (@acquasantanyc) in Manhattan.

Thanks to Edwardo for sharing his beautiful tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Our Lady of Guadalupe on Marco by Mariza

A couple weeks ago I met Mariza and Marco and walking down Broadway in the Financial District,

The couple was visiting from Portugal and, as it turns out, Mariza is one of the artist-proprietors at Ink & Wheels, a tattoo and motorcycle establishment in Lisbon.

Marco shared a tattoo that Maritza had done on his inner arm earlier this year:

Mariza told me she is always busy and rarely has time to tattoo her boyfriend.

However, Marco explained, the shop was closed for Good Friday, so she finally had some time to tattoo him. Given the holiday, it seemed appropriate to get Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Thanks to Mariza and Marco for pausing during their trip to New York City and sharing this tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Chris Honors His Mother with a Back Piece

Last weekend, while riding my bike along the Shore Promenade at the southern tip of Brooklyn, I spotted the back piece above.

Although it is not completed, Chris, to whom the tattoo belongs, was more then happy to share it with us.

The story of this tattoo goes back a bit. Chris explained to me that, when he was seventeen, his father took him to get a tattoo. He got a piece on the left side of his back. He recalls his mother being beside herself over this, upset that he had gotten a tattoo at such an early age.

You can tell from the photo that, on the left side, one of the wings is covering the previous tattoo. Eventually, one won't be able to tell it was there.

Chris' mother passed away several years ago and he began this back piece to honor her memory. The central figure is the religious icon from Mexico Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Not only is it a spiritual tribute, but it is a practical one in that it is covering up the tattoo that Chris so vividly recalls upsetting his mother.

This grand design has been a work in progress for three and a half years. Renee at Memphis Tattoo has been the artist working on the piece. Work from Renee at Memphis Tattoo (now called Top Shelf Tattoo) appeared previously on Tattoosday here.

Thanks to Chris for sharing his tribute to the memory of his mother with us here at Tattoosday!
